Wayne St. (Mich.) wins GLIAC title
Late tip-in leads Warriors to first conference title since 1999
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Wayne St. (Mich.) (22-7) won its first GLIAC tournament championship since 1999 with a 73-71 victory against host Ferris State (22-7) on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Mike Hollingsworth tipped in a Dale Brundidge miss with 1.5 seconds left, sending the Warriors into a jubilant celebration that concluded with WSU cutting down the nets at Jim Wink Arena.
Hollingsworth, who was voted to the All-Tournament team, scored 22 points and collected a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior Bryan Smothers earned Tournament MVP accolades as he tallied 11 points and nine assists against the Bulldogs. Smothers had 20 points in the 73-64 win against Findlay yesterday.
