Florida Southern pulls away for win
Evans tallies 19 points to lead Moccasins past Armstrong Atlantic
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- All five Florida Southern starters scored in double figures as the 22nd-ranked Moccasins used a big second half to get past Armstrong Atlantic 97-89 on Monday night.
The victory was Florida Southern's second against the Pirates in nine days. The Moccasins were also victorious on Nov. 26 in the championship game of the Terrace Hotel/Lader Media Group Tournament winning there by a slim one-point margin 85-84.
Seth Evans was the Mocs' top scorer, as Florida Southern matched its best scoring effort of the season. He had 19 points, including three makes from three-point range and made all four of his attempts from the free throw line. Evans has hit 34-35 (97.1 percent) at the line this season.
Brett Bailey, who had a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double in the Moccasins prior victory against the Pirates, topped that effort with a 18-point, 18-rebound peformance on Monday. His 18 rebounds set a new career high for the junior forward.
Garrett Putman joined Bailey in the double-double ranks with a season-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Capers tossed in 17 points and Dominic Lane added 12 for the Mocs.
Chris Vanlandingham led Armstrong with 22 points, while Aric Miller added 19 in a losing effort for the Pirates.
The Pirates held a slim 42-41 lead at halftime, but the Moccasins went on a 28-17 run to open the second half and held on from there. Florida Southern had its biggest lead of the night at 87-70 at the 3:57 mark.
