Wellman tabbed DI committee chair
Wake Forest AD also has served on DI Baseball Committee
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee has selected Ron Wellman, director of athletics at Wake Forest, as chair of the committee for the 2013-14 season. The committee’s decision was made Friday, June 29, during its annual summer meeting.
Wellman will serve as the vice chair of the committee for the 2012-13 season, supporting Mike Bobinski, the current chair and director of athletics at Xavier.
“It is an honor to be selected as chair of this committee,” Wellman said. “We have excellent committee members who are conscientious and fair and take their responsibility very seriously. I look forward to my continuing relationship with them in this new role.”
Wellman is the longest tenured director of athletics in the Atlantic Coast Conference, having served in that capacity since October 1992. He is past chair of the NCAA DI Management Council and the DI Baseball Committee; other prior service includes functioning as the president of the DI-A Athletics Directors’ Association, chair of the NCAA Baseball Academic Enhancement Committee and member of the NCAA Diversity Leadership Strategic Planning Committee.
A native of Celina, Ohio, Wellman earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Bowling Green. He previously served as head baseball, assistant basketball and assistant football coach at Elmhurst and head baseball coach at Northwestern.
The members of the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee for the 2012-13 academic year include Bobinski; Joe Alleva, director of athletics, LSU; Scott Barnes, director of athletics, Utah State; Joe Castiglione, director of athletics, Oklahoma; Doug Fullerton, commissioner, Big Sky Conference; Mark Hollis, director of athletics, Michigan State; Judy MacLeod, executive associate commissioner, Conference USA; Bernard Muir, director of athletics, Delaware; and Jamie Zaninovich, commissioner, West Coast Conference.
