KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The National Association of Basketball Coaches on Monday announced former Albion coach Mike Turner and former York (Pa.) coach Jeff Gamber as the head coaches for the 2013 Reese’s Division III College All-Star Game, which will be played as part of the NCAA DIII Men’s Basketball Championship. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the official candy partner of the NCAA.
The Reese’s Division III College All-Star game will be played at 3:30 p.m. ET March 23, prior to the DIII semifinals, at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. The teams are composed of two senior student-athletes from each of the eight regions in Division III and two seniors have been selected by online voting on D3hoops.com.
This year’s DIII national championship game will be played at 12:30 p.m. April 7 at Philips Arena in Atlanta. The game is being played as the NCAA celebrates 75 years of March Madness.
Turner, the 2009 recipient of the NABC Division III Coaches’ Distinguished Service Award, is the head coach of the West team. He was head coach at Albion for 38 seasons and completed his coaching career with a record of 527-319, the most victories of any coach in program history. A former chair of the DIII men’s basketball committee, Turner led his teams to four DIII tournaments and finished third in the nation in 1978. Turner and his wife Peg, a grade school teacher, also founded the Albion College Student-Athlete Mentoring Program in which Albion student-athletes tutor, read, and mentor over 250 grade school children annually.
Gamber, the head coach at York for 36 seasons, retired with a 493-425 record as the all-time leader in career wins at York. The 1997 recipient of the NABC Division III Coaches’ Distinguished Service Award, he is the former chair of the DIII men’s basketball committee and was also honored as the NABC Division III National Coach of the Year in 2005, as he led York to the NCAA semifinals. Gamber developed the “Three Point Attack” program, which helped raise funds for cancer research and the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer program.
