NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport scored the first six points of the game and never trailed, scoring a 68-51 victory over Washington & Lee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Freeman Center Friday night.
CNU quickly built the margin to double figures, 17-6, and pulled away to a 40-24 halftime lead.
The Generals never got closer than 13 points in the second half and CNU built its margin to as many as 23 at 54-31 with 11:37 to play.
The Captains shot 53 percent in the first half and 49 for the game in running their unbeaten record to 29-0. They also had a 34-21 advantage in rebounding.
Alysa Kerr was the top scorer for CNU, tossing in 17 points off the bench, hitting 6-8 from the floor. Chelsie Schweers scored 16 for CNU, while Jessica Moore added 13.
The Generals, who closed the season 18-10, got 14 points from Meg Ingram. Rachel Warrick and Katy Wilson each scored ten in reserve roles.
Christopher Newport will meet Roanoke in the second round Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
