INDIANAPOLIS -- The fourth annual 4Kay Run Hydrated by POWERADE ZERO is set for one of Indianapolis’ most iconic locations – the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – as part of the 2011 NCAA Women’s Final Four. The run, a mainstay of the Women’s Final Four weekend of events, is scheduled for at 8 a.m. CT on April 2.

“With the Women’s Final Four being here in Indianapolis this year we have looked for ways to tie-in the unique attributes of the city to assist in helping to make our ancillary events even more special,” said Sue Donohoe, NCAA vice president of Division I women’s basketball. “To be able to host the 4Kay Run at the ‘Greatest Race Course in the World,’ is a tremendous opportunity for those who have dreamed of one day setting foot on the world’s most famous racetrack. It should be a very popular event.”

The race is held in honor of the late North Carolina State head women’s basketball coach Kay Yow and all race proceeds benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for cancer research. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to the fight against women’s cancers by raising funds for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.

Kay Yow was a past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), and a galvanizing voice for the Association. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and battled the disease for the third time before her passing on Jan. 24, 2009, at the age of 66. In her 38 years as a head coach at the college level, Yow is one of only six Division I head women's basketball mentors to achieve 700 career victories. Yow was also the head coach of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team that won the gold medal in Seoul.

Registration for the 4Kay is $20 if you sign up online before the day of the race or $25 on-site. You can register for the event by visiting www.ncaa.com/finalfour. Registration the day of the race, as well as packet pick-up, will start at 7 a.m. Walkers are also encouraged to participate in the 4Kay Run. The first 1,500 runners and walkers to register will receive a long-sleeved 4Kay Run T-shirt donated by Nike. The sizes of the shirts are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Last year in San Antonio, more than 1,200 participants took part in the 4Kay Run and $40,000 was raised as a result of the event. In all, more than $150,000 has been raised during the first three years of the event.

“Indianapolis is a great sporting community as evidenced by our teams, world-class sporting events like the 2011 NCAA Women’s Final Four and many sport governing bodies, including the NCAA,” said Jeff Belskus, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation. “As a sports facility that has been a part of the Indianapolis community for over a century, all of us at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are excited to partner with the NCAA and the Indiana Sports Corporation in this 4Kay Run to highlight our community, our willingness as organizations to work together and our community’s spirit of giving back to worthwhile organizations like the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.”
