No. 20 Medaille loses late
Lady Mavs fall for just second time in conference in two years
Pittsburgh, Pa. – The No. 20 Medaille Lady Mavericks played through nine lead changes and eight ties, but came up just short as they missed two 3-pointers late and fell to host La Roche 61-58.
Senior Amanda Sahhar scored a team-high 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting to go along with nine rebounds to lead Medaille as the Lady Mavs earned a share of the AMCC regular-season title with La Roche. It is Medaille's fifth title in six seasons.
Freshman Bianca Smiley added 17 points as the Lady Mavs dropped just their second conference game in two seasons.
The first half was a sea-saw battle, with four ties and four lead changes. La Roche (21-4, 15-2) held the edge for much of the first half, leading by as many as seven points at the 7:26 mark. Medaille chipped away at the lead, and went into halftime ahead following a layup from junior Tanisha Travis, her only field goal of the game.
The second half was just as topsy-turvy as the first with the Lady Mavericks controlling much of the period. Medaille led by as many as eight points with 7:13 remaining in the contest before freshman Jessica Pitts took over for the Lady Redhawks, scoring 16 of La Roche’s last 21 points, including the go-ahead free throws with :44 remaining.
