POMONA, Calif. — The NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball West Region Tournament continued Saturday with Grand Canyon defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 55-35 in the second round.
The third-seeded Otters and second-seeded Lopes were neck and neck for most of the first half. CSUMB came out firing from 3-point range early, going on a 7-0 run with help from Holly Holcomb, who sunk a trey to widen the lead to eight.
The Lopes surged back to tie the game on a 3-pointer from Maylinn Smith and then Samantha Murphy gave them a 22-19 lead as part of an 11-0 run in the first. Smith and Murphy carried the GCU offense, scoring 21 and 14, respectively.
GCU kept the offensive going and led by as many as 20 points to eliminate the Otters and advance to the third round.
The Lopes (29-2) will play Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in Kellogg Gym against the winner of Saturday’s Cal Poly Pomona-Alaska Anchorage game.
