Amherst drops CNU in semifinals
Lord Jeffs to play in program's first title matchup
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Four Amherst players recorded double-digit scoring efforts, as the Lord Jeffs defeated Christopher Newport 69-59 in the semifinals of the 2011 Division III Women’s Basketball Championships at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.
Caroline Stedman led all Amherst (31-1) scorers with 18 points, while the Lord Jeffs’ Sarah Leyman added 14 points. Amherst’s Kristyn Dunleavy and Lem Atanga McCormick each made 10 points, while Jaclyn Daigneault grabbed 10 boards. Christopher Newport’s Lauren Gural recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Chelsie Schweers led all scorers with 19 points.
Christopher Newport (29-4) got ahead of Amherst 11-2 during the first seven minutes of the game, but the Lord Jeffs would regain momentum and go on a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 12-11 with 9:31 left in the first half.
With 6:34 remaining before the break, CNU’s Schweers sank a shot from behind the arc off of a fastbreak play to tie the game at 20. The Captains’ effort was not enough, as Amherst went on an 11-6 run during the final 6:34 of the half to take a 31-26 advantage heading into the locker room.
Amherst’s Stedman led all scorers with 14 points in the first half and grabbed two rebounds, while McCormick added eight points for the Lord Jeffs. Schweers led Christopher Newport with 10 points and four boards before the break.
CNU cut Amherst’s lead to two points, 35-33, after Gural got a shot off while being fouled and successfully completed the three-point play with 17:12 left in the game. The Lord Jeffs answered back with a 6-0 run that lasted more than two minutes. Amherst’s largest lead of the game came with a minute left in the game, when Dunleavy hit a pair of free throws to give Amherst a 66-52 advantage.
