Wisconsin fires Stone after eight years
MADISON, Wis. -- Lisa Stone was fired as the women's basketball coach at Wisconsin on Monday after eight seasons and just one appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Stone's record was 128-119. The team lost in the first round of last year's NCAA tournament and finished 16-15 this season.
"Our women's basketball program has not reached and maintained the level of success I believe is possible," athletic director Barry Alvarez said.
He said a search for a new coach begins immediately.
"This program has meant the world to me and I have put my heart and soul into it," Stone said.
Stone is from nearby Oregon, Wis., and became coach of the Badgers in 2003 after three seasons at Drake. After losing records her first three years, Wisconsin reached the NIT final in 2006-07 and had winning records the last five seasons.
In the 2010 NCAA tournament, Wisconsin was a No. 7 seed, but fell to Vermont in the opening round. This season, the Badgers lost seven consecutive games in nonconference play began and never recovered.
