Clayton State heads to championship
Lakers to make first appearance in title game
St. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Shaw (25-12) took on the Clayton State Lakers (34-1) in the first semifinal of the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
A balanced attack by Clayton State helped the Lakers defeat Shaw 63-46. Clayton State started the game strong jumping to an 11-1 lead with a little under 14 minutes to play.
With some poor outside shooting by the Lakers towards the end of the half, the Lady Bears clawed their way back into the game, and went into the locker room only four points behind (27-23). The Lakers ended the first half shooting just 31.3 percent from the field, but were only 1-12 (8.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
Shaw shot 23.5 percent (8-34) from the field in the first half going 0-2 from long range.
The second half wasn’t easy for the Lady Bears as they shot just 26 percent from the field. Clayton State took advantage of the Lady Bears poor shooting gaining a ten point lead with about 11 minutes to go.
Brittany Hall had a big second half, scoring nine points for the Lakers. Kayla Mobley lead the charge for the Lakers with 13 points and seven rebounds while Renee Jackson dumped in 10 points going 6-6 from the free-throw line.
Demaria Liles recorded a double-double for the Lady Bears, scoring 13 points and snagging 11 boards. Aslea Williams added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The battle for the crown is set for 8 p.m. ET Friday on ESPN2. Both the Lakers and the Michigan Tech Huskies make their first appearance in the national title game.
