Notebook: Hot Start
RECORD RUN: Florida Gulf Coast University posted a 79-43 victory against Lynn University on Dec. 12 to extend the Eagles winning streak to a school-record 10 games.
The unbeaten Eagles received their first-ever national ranking for their perfect start, entering the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll at No. 24. FGCU has recorded a 37.9 scoring margin average this season with only two victories by less than 30 points.
Senior guard Candy Myers needs just six points to break the schools all-time scoring record. She currently has 721 career points and is averaging 9.8 points per game.
MAKING THEIR MARK: Senior Sascha Hansen scored 24 points as she led St. Cloud State to an 85-53 win over St. Thomas (Minn.) on Dec. 12 as the Huskies earned its school-record ninth consecutive victory.
Hansen eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in the second half to become the 23rd player in school history to accomplish the feat. She is only of only eight players in SCSU history to tally over 1,000 points and collect 300 assists during a career.
The Huskies are off to their best start since the 1989-90 season, and are currently ranked sixth in the national poll.
ON THE ROAD, AGAIN: Glenville States Denae Dobbins contributed three double-double performances as she helped the Pioneers post a 3-0 record against Gannon, C.W. Post and Edinboro last week.
Dobbins, a senior center from Glenville, W.V., averaged 15.0 points, 14.3 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game to earn West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week honors. Dobbins, who notched her third 16-rebound game of the year against Gannon on Dec. 9, is leading the league with 12.5 rebounds per game.
GSC is 8-0 on the season despite the fact they have yet to play a home game this year. The Pioneers are set to play on their home court, the Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium, on Jan. 12 against Wheeling Jesuit.
SECOND TIME AROUND: Minnesota Duluths Lindsey Dietz was selected North Central Conference Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks after leading the Bulldogs to a trio of wins.
Dietz averaged 20.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in the three games while shooting 57.7 percent from the field. The senior from Elk River, Minn., leads the league with 22.5 points per game and a 64.9 field goal percentage and is second in rebounds with 8.0 per game.
The Bulldogs moved up three spots to No. 22 in the national rankings after extending their winning streak to 10 games.
NOTABLE: No. 8 Henderson State is off to its best start in 28 years with a 6-1 record and its only loss coming at the hands of Division I Southeast Missouri State. Like Glenville State, the Lady Reddies have not played a home game this season ¦ Top-ranked Washburn will No. 2 Drury in a meeting of the nations top two teams on Dec. 17. The Lady Blues will put their 26-game winning streak on the line against the Panthers.
