St. Louis, Mo. - The Transylvania University Pioneers began their post-season schedule with a 65-52 victory over the defending NCAA Division III champion Howard Payne Lady Jackets on Friday, March 6, in St. Louis, Mo.
Howard Payne opened an early lead thanks in part to a three point play by sophomore Katy Sarem, which gave them a 11-5 advantage. Transylvania weathered Howard Payne's early 5-for-7 shooting streak by responding with a 12-0 run to take a six point lead. The teams battled back and forth, but Howard Payne was held to just two points in the final five minutes of the first half, allowing Transylvania to go into the locker room with a 29-22 lead.
The Pioneers did not let up in the second half as they pushed the lead to 13 at 16:21 when Sarem drained a three-point shot from the wing. Transylvania put the game out of reach when sophomore Holly Milburn scored her 18th point on a fast break lay-up to give Transylvania a 54-32 advantage at the 7:35 mark.
Millburn led the Pioneers with 18 points and 12 boards while sophomore Olivia Akridge poured in an additional 14 points along with a team-leading four assists. The Lady Jackets had three players score in double figures, led by junior Hope Hohertz who scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds before fouling out with 3:54 left in the game.
