YORK, Pa. - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team saw its season come to a close Friday night with a 75-61 loss to No. 12 York (PA) in a first round NCAA Tournament game.

The Captains trailed 25-24 with 9:18 left in the first half when the Spartans went on a 17-6 run to lead by 12, 42-30, with 1:03 to play in the opening half. York went on to lead 42-32 at the break.

CNU came out in the second half and out-scored the Spartans 19-9 over the first nine minutes and 30 seconds to tie the score at 51-all on Chelsie Schweers bucket. York went ahead 55-51 but saw the Captains score eight of the next 10 points to take a 59-57 lead with 6:19 to play.

The Spartans however proved to be too much down the stretch as they scored 13 of the next 15 points to take a nine point lead with 1:21 left. York would force four straight CNU turnovers with less than two minutes left in the game and combine that with the Spartans hitting their free throws down the stretch, provided the final margin.

For the game, York shot 27-of-59 (46%) from the field, 6-of-15 (40%) from behind the arc and 15-of-23 (65%) from the free throw line. The Spartans were led by April Sparkman's 19 points. Keli Ward finished with 15 points and seven assists, Amanda Andrews added 13 points and seven assists and Jamie Sapp had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Christopher Newport shot 24-of-65 (37%) from the floor, 3-of-9 (33%) from long range and 10-of-17 (59%) from the charity stripe. Schweers led all scorers with a game-high 20 points to go along nine rebounds. Jessica Moore finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

York improves to 26-2 on the year while CNU finishes the season 22-7. The Spartans will meet Baruch in a second round game Saturday at 7 pm.
