Central Oklahoma Defeats Southeastern Oklahoma

CANYON, Texas – Cristina Yarbrough’s lay-up with two seconds remaining in overtime lifted #3-seed Central Oklahoma to a 68-66 victory over No. 6-seed Southeastern Oklahoma, Friday afternoon during NCAA Division II South Central Regional basketball action at the First United Bank Center.
The win lifts UCO to 26-5 for the season, while SOSU ends their campaign with a 21-9 mark.
“We are just excited to still be playing basketball tomorrow,” said UCO head coach Guy Hardaker. “Southeastern Oklahoma jumped and trapped us early and it took us awhile to respond to what they were throwing at us.”
The Bronchos controlled play during the first half, leading by as many as 10 points on two separate occasions. UCO held a 34-28 lead at the half.
The Savage Storm fought back, taking their first lead, 44-43, at 14:57 of the second half on a lay-up bhy Jasmine Hughey. UCO retook the lead, 46-44, on a three-pointer by Rose Anderson.
SOSU forged ahead by three points at the 12:02 mark on a Jessica Hesse jumper, but UCO retook the advantage on consecutive buckets by Mallory Markus and Anderson.
The teams would then trade leads over the remaining twelve minutes. UCO’s Jessica Beckley’s layup with 1:23 remaining in regulation gave the Bronchos a 62-60 lead.
SOSU’s Elizabeth Dean hit a 10-foot jumper with just two seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
The Savage Storm opened a four-point lead, 66-62, over the first 1:45 of overtime on a layup’s by Hughey and Destiny Brown but those would be the final points SOSU would score.
A pair of Yarbrough free throws cut the margin to two points, 66-64, with 2:13 remaining, and Anderson hit a short jumper to tie the contest at the one-minute mark, setting up Yarbroughs game winner.
UCO was led by Anderson’s 19 points, while Ashley Beckley scored 16 and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. The Bronchos shot 40 percent from the floor and 65.4 percent from the line.
SOSU was paced by Destiny Brown’s game-high 21 points and 18 rebounds. Ashley Tucker chipped in 12 points and Kacey Russell scored 10. The Savage Storm shot 38.5 percent from the f ield, 60.0 percent from the foul stripe.
Central Oklahoma will next play the winner of Washburn/Incarnate Word, Saturday evening at 6 p.m. CDT.
