March 22, 2009
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -Alison Lacey made six of Iowa State's record-tying 16 3-pointers and the fourth-seeded Cyclones routed East Tennessee State 85-53 in the opening round of NCAA tournament on Sunday.
Lacey led the Cyclones (25-8) with 18 points as Iowa State built an early double-digit lead and cruised against the Buccaneers.
The Cyclones will play either fifth-seeded Tennessee or 12th-seeded Ball State in the second round on Tuesday night.
Iowa State's 16 3-pointers tied the tournament record for 3s in a game set by Harvard in the opening round of the 1996 tournament.
ETSU (20-11) was hoping to pull the upset in its second NCAA appearance but couldn't overcome Iowa State's 3-point barrage. The Buccaneers shot just 31 percent from the floor and turned it over 17 times.
Taronda Wiles led the Buccaneers with 16 points.
