ATLANTA – The Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team premiered at No. 8 in USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 preseason poll, released Wednesday.

The Seawolves – coming off a program-best 31-4 campaign and their second straight NCAA Semifinals appearance – are the highest-ranked West Region team in the rankings, joined by No. 14 UC San Diego and No. 16 Seattle Pacific.

Seven of the top 10 teams in the poll were participants at last year’s Elite Eight, including top-ranked Michigan Tech, which drew 12 of 26 first-place votes.

With Wednesday’s ranking, UAA has now been in the top 10 of the D-II poll for 21 straight weeks, and 29 of the last 31 weeks, spending the other two at No. 11. The Seawolves held the No. 1 ranking for four weeks in January and February last year before finishing No. 3 in the final poll.

With three starters and seven letterwinners returning, UAA begins the season with an exhibition Sunday, Nov. 8, at Duke – ranked No. 6 in both major Div. I polls – in Durham, N.C. The game matching Div. I and II powers will start at 10 a.m. AST and can be heard live in Anchorage on FM-93.7 KAFC.
