Oneonta remains undefeated with non-conference win over Utica
Utica, N.Y. (12/12/2010) – Senior forward Jessica Berry netted a game-high 22 points and added 14 rebounds but it was not enough as the Utica College women's basketball team lost to visiting Oneonta State 66-60 in non conference play at the Clark Athletic Center Saturday.
Oneonta, which remains undefeated at 7-0 on the year, shot 42.6 percent from the floor (26-of-61) on the afternoon and four different Red Dragons scored in double figures. Rome native Madison Slagle led the way for Oneonta with a team-high 16 points. Junior Samantha Szkotak, a SUNYAC All-Conference First Team selection a year ago, netted ten points and snagged five rebounds.
The visitors used an 18-8 run in the first 7:14 of the contest to open up a double-digit lead after Slagle drilled one of her game-high four 3-pointers for Oneonta. Utica (4-5) answered with an 11-4 run over the course of the next 4:03 to cut the Red Dragon lead to just three points, 22-19, with under nine minutes to go in the first half.
Oneonta held the Pioneers scoreless for the final 3:13 of the first half, while chipping in three straight buckets of its own, to take a commanding 36-25 lead at the half.
The Red Dragons would extend their lead to as many as 16 points with 7:50 to go in the contest before Utica made one final run. The Pioneers made the game interesting by way of a 16-4 run in a span of 6:46 to cut the Oneonta lead to four points, 61-57, with 1:04 left in regulation.
Oneonta dropped 5-of-6 free throws with under a minute to go to seal the six point victory.
Sophomore sniper Danielle Busansky knocked down three 3-pointers and scored a season-high nine points for the Pioneers, while junior guard Katie McGee added ten points, six assists and three steals. Senior guard Devon Croll scored eight points and added five rebounds.
Kristin Pappalardo recorded ten points on an unblemished 4-of-4 shooting from the floor, while Erika Puffer provided an excellent spark for the Red Dragons off the bench with ten points and a team-high nine rebounds. Six of her nine boards came on the offensive end of the floor.
The Pioneers return to the hardwood on Tuesday night for their final game before the semester break when they travel to non conference foe Union College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Oneonta returns to action at the Las Vegas Hoopla Tournament on Dec. 20th when it takes on Heidelberg at 10 a.m. PST.
