EMPORIA, Kan. – Two free throws with two seconds left enabled the No. 14 Emporia State Lady Hornets to hold off Truman State 69-67 on Sunday afternoon.

Alli Volkens scored her 22nd and 23rd points of the game from the charity stripe after a late foul called against the Bulldogs with the game tied at 65-65. Following the two made charity shots, Amy Galey's last-gasp attempt for Truman was short and Emporia escaped with the victory.

Truman (8-10; 6-8 MIAA) led by nine with 11 minutes to play but a 16-2 run by ESU during the next five minutes gave the Lady Hornets (13-5; 10-4 MIAA) a five-point lead heading down the stretch.

Breanna Daniels dialed a 3-pointer with under a minute to play to knot the score at 65 apiece. Volkens scored with 40 seconds showing to put ESU up by a bucket.

Galey missed a tying attempt but freshman Nicole Gloor grabbed the offensive rebound and the Bulldogs called a timeout to set up a play with 12 seconds showing. Galey found Daniels for the equalizer with eight left on the clock but ESU was able to get the ball down the floor quickly and Volkens was fouled by Jennifer Conway to set up the winning free throws.

The two teams battled throughout the first half with nine ties and six lead changes in the first 20 minutes. Truman and Emporia went to the locker room deadlocked at 36 apiece.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with their biggest push of the game as Becka McHenry scored six early points and Truman led by eight. Conway gave Truman their largest lead at nine following a three-point play with 11:31 remaining.

Volkens, Joyelyn Cummings and Rheanna Egli sparked the Lady Hornets during the 16-2 run. Volkens finished with 23 points and added 11 rebounds while Rachel Hanf added 13 points on four three-pointers.

Daniels paced the Bulldogs with 16 points followed by 14 from McHenry, 12 from Gloor and 10 from Conway.
