GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin used its home court to its advantage in cruising to a 73-37 victory against La Roche in a first-round NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament game on Friday night at Van Noord Arena. Making its 13th appearance in the Division III tournament, Calvin led 35-8 at halftime and never looked back in improving to 15-12 all-time in tournament play.

Sophomore center Carissa Verkaik just missed a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots. She picked up her 33rd career double-double in the process including her 13th of the season. Sophomore Ally Wolffis added 10 points for the Knights, who outrebounded La Roche 54-37. Junior Courtney Kurncz also matched a career-high in rebounds with 10 boards.

Making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, La Roche (23-5) picked up 14 points off the bench from Cassie Cygan. La Roche also received eight points and six rebounds from Jessica Pitts.

Calvin will now face Chicago (23-3) in a second-round game on Saturday night at Van Noord Arena. The meeting will feature a pair of nationally-ranked teams as Chicago is ranked fifth in the Division III coaches poll and sixth in the d3hoops.com top 25 poll, while Calvin is ranked 13th and 18th, respectively.
