Fort Lewis wins first RMAC title
PUEBLO, Colo. – Fort Lewis College won its first ever Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title Saturday afternoon with a 65-57 win against Metro State at the Colorado State Fair Events Center.
The win improves the Skyhawks to 28-2 on the year and gives them an automatic berth to the NCAA Central Regional Tournament. The Roadrunners, who entered the RMAC Shootout as the top seed and the top-ranked team in the Central Region, move to 27-2.
Dana Schreibvogel, the RMAC Shootout Tournament Most Valuable Player, posted 13 points and four rebounds. Jenna Santistevan made 6 of 8 from the floor for 14 points to go with her 11 rebounds. All 11 of Mary Rose Paiz caroms were on the defensive end, while Abby Jackson contributed 20 points on 6 of 12 field goal shooting (4 of 8 from long range).
Alyssa Benson came off the bench for Metro State to score a team-high 18 points. Cassondra Bratton added 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
As a team, Fort Lewis made 23 of 46 field goals and 13 of 17 free throws. The Roadrunners netted 23 of 57 field goals (.404) and 4 of 8 free throws.
