Mintun leads UC Davis to title
Late charge by Cal Poly comes up short in Big West title game
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Paige Mintun scored 20 points and UC Davis held off a second-half charge by Cal Poly for a 66-49 victory in the Big West Conference Tournament final Saturday and a trip to the NCAA tournament.
Unlike most Big West teams this season, fourth-seeded Davis (24-8) found a way to keep Cal Poly senior Rachel Clancy from beating them.
The Aggies held the Big West Conference Player of the Year to eight points in the first half in taking a 35-22 lead at the break. She responded with 12 points in the second half, but the top-seeded Mustangs (18-12) couldn't overcome their deficit.
Clancy put a scare into the Aggies by scoring the first five points out of the break and helped Cal Poly get within six points, but Mintun helped restore order with her low-post attack and free throw shooting.
Minton was tabbed as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
