TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo utilized an 11-0 run that stretched both halves to spark a 74-59 victory against Alabama on Wednesday in third round of the WNIT before 3,740 fans in Savage Arena. With the win, the Rockets improve to 26-8 on the season and advance to the quarterfinals of the postseason tourney.
The Rockets trailed 30-28 with 1:20 remaining in the first half, before going on the game-changing burst to keep their postseason alive. Senior Melissa Goodall and junior Naama Shafir started the run with a pair of charity tosses each for the final points of the first stanza. Senior Jessica Williams then converted a three-point play and Shafir delivered a basket and two more free throws to give the 2010-11 MAC regular-season champions a lead they would not relinquish.
Shafir paced five UT players in double figures with a game-high 19 points and five assists, knocking down 11-of-12 shots from the charity stripe. Senior Jessica Williams contributed 13 points, senior Melissa Goodall had 10 points with eight boards, redshirt freshman Andola Dortch chipped in 10 points with a season-high nine caroms and junior Haylie Linn had 10 points off the bench to help the Midnight Blue & Gold record their second-consecutive victory against a SEC opponent.
