Wis.-Stevens Point downs Franklin
Barber notches 18 points, 10 rebounds to spark Pointers to win
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Ashley Averkamp and Sam Barber combined for 34 points as Wisconsin-Stevens Point held off a late charge by Franklin to advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 61-58 victory on Friday evening.
Barber put the Pointers ahead early as she connected on two free throws, giving UWSP a 13-6 advantage with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
UWSP increased its lead to 10 at 26-16 on a Liz Althoff layup to give the Pointers their largest lead of the first half with just over three minutes remaining.
Franklin went on a 12-2 run to end the half to even the score at 28-28 heading into the break.
The Pointers jumped on the Grizzlies early in the second half, once again increasing their lead to 10 points with 11:39 remaining.
UWSP held a five-point advantage with just over six minutes remaining before Franklin made its run. The Grizzlies cut the Pointers lead to two points on two occasions, both off of baskets by Annie Tarkington.
With the UWSP lead cut to two with 1:36 remaining, Althoff, Barber and Cassie Bandow converted on 7-of-8 free throws to help clinch the victory for the Pointers down the stretch.
The Pointers and Grizzles were lackluster on offense as Franklin shot 31.7 percent from the field and UWSP converted on 28.6 percent of its attempts. Both teams did shoot well from the charity stripe as the Pointers connected on 23-of-28 while the Grizzlies knocked down 15-of-18.
Barber recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while tallying four assists and two steals. Averkamp shot 7-of-14 from the field, scoring 16 points, recording seven rebounds and a career-high seven blocks.
Jessica Prewett led Franklin with 18 points, while Tarkington added 14 points to go along with seven assists.
