St. Thomas beats Martin Luther
Weiers Tommies’ top performer with 15 points, 11 rebounds
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- No. 10 St. Thomas (Minn.) (27-1) used a 17-1 run midway through the second half to erase a 45-41 deficit en route to a win against Martin Luther (20-8) in Friday night's NCAA first-round playoff game.
Maggie Weiers had 15 points and 11 rebounds while Taylor Young had 14 points and eight rebounds as St. Thomas ran its win streak to 27, and improved to 14-0 at home this season.
It was the first NCAA playoff victory for UST women's hoops in 11 seasons.
The Tommies survived 17-30 shooting from the foul line as they held a 51-35 rebounding advantage.
Haley Loesch scored all nine of her points in the second half and helped UST post a 23-12 advantage in bench points.
Erica Babinec scored 23 points for the Knights, who shot just 30 percent from the floor but stayed in the game with only 10 turnovers and shot 17-21 from the free throw line.
