Metro State whips Fort Lewis
Cervantes scores game-high 18 points to down Skyhawks
WAYNE, Neb. -- 10th-ranked and No. 2-seeded Metro State topped No. 12 Fort Lewis 60-42 on Saturday to advance to the Round of 16 for the second season in a row. The Roadrunners improved to 27-3 overall this season, while FLC's season came to an end at 26-5.
Jasmine Cervantes scored a game-high 18 points and had eight rebounds and four assists. She hit 6-of-10 from the floor and 6-of-8 at the line.
Kristin Valencia scored 10 points and had nine points, making 5-of-6 from the floor. Alyssa Benson added nine points, Caley Dow had seven and Brandi Valencia and Candice Kohn each scored six.
The Roadrunners held FLC to just 30.4 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers.
Metro used a 10-2 run early in the first half to build a 16-9 lead just eight minutes into the game. The Roadrunners carried a 31-23 lead into halftime after shooting 52 percent from the floor.
The Skyhawks cut the lead to 41-36 with 8:48. Cervantes then hit two baskets on a 6-0 run to stretch the lead to 11 and Metro built its lead to 17 points with 1:46 left.
Katerina Garcia led FLC with 12 points, including 3-of-5 from the outside.
