Ashland starts season at No. 1

After losing national title game last season, Eagles start at top

Ashland picked up its second No. 1 ranking of the preseason on Tuesday when the USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Coaches’ Poll was released.

The Eagles sit on top of the poll with 767 points. Bentley is ranked second with 726 points and Pittsburg State is third with 634 points. Earlier this preseason, the Division II Bulletin also tabbed the Eagles as the top team in the country.

Ashland went 33-2 last season and advanced to the NCAA championship game in San Antonio. AU lost to Shaw in overtime. The Eagles open play this season on Nov. 9 against West Texas A&M in the Disney Tip-off Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

AU’s first home game is Saturday, Nov. 17 against Kentucky Wesleyan.

Defending champion Shaw received eight first-place votes, but will start the season ranked ninth in the country.
