No. 6 Mount Union ambushes No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan, defending champs
N. MANCHESTER, Ind. – No. 6 Mount Union exacted a small amount of payback in their season opener Friday night as the Purple Raiders knocked off No. 5 ranked and defending national champions Illinois Wesleyan in the Bankers Classic at Manchester University in North Manchester, Ind.
Illinois Wesleyan (0-1) hit a shot at buzzer in an NCAA Round of 16 game in Alliance eight months ago to win 70-69 and go on to win the national championship.
All-American senior guard Rosa LaMattina led Mount Union with 19 points and six steals. Senior Marybeth Leitch posted a career-best 11 points in her first career start while senior Brittany Kilgore had 10 points and five rebounds.
A back and forth first half featured 12 lead changes, Mount Union led 35-34 at the break. The start of the second half featured more of the same as the score was tied at 48 with 13 minutes to play when the Raiders went on an 18-6 surge in the next seven minutes to take a 66-52 lead.
Illinois Wesleyan got no closer than five points the rest of the way.
