Slivka's layup in final second lifts UW-Parkside past No. 19 Indianapolis
SOMERS, Wis. -- A Danielle Slivka layup as time expired lifted Wisconsin-Parkside past 19th-ranked Indianapolis 77-75 on Saturday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division battle inside DeSimone Gymnasium. The Rangers have now won four consecutive games, including two against top-25 foes.
As the final horn sounded, the contest appeared to be headed to overtime with the score tied at 75. A mid-court meeting of the officials confirmed a Ranger timeout and put two seconds back on the clock. The inbounds pass following the timeout found the hands of Danielle Slivka who layed in a shot at the buzzer to lift UWP (13-6, 7-4 GLVC) to its third win against a ranked squad this season. Slivka accounted for eight of the Rangers' final 10 points of the game, posting her second double-double of the season, finishing with 10 rebounds and a career-high 17 points.
The Greyhounds (13-6, 6-5 GLVC) led by as many as nine points in the opening 20 minutes of action and had a 37-33 lead at the halftime break. A Kristin Turner layup with 5:02 left in the first half gave UIndy a 31-22 advantage, its largest lead of the night. The Rangers quickly closed the gap with a 9-2 run during the next two and a half minutes with a Tara Knapstein jumper pulling the hosts to within two at 33-31 with 2:14 remaining.
UW-Parkside stormed out of the gates in the second half, utilizing a 17-4 run during the opening six minutes to secure a nine-point advantage. Slivka opened the run with a layup before getting back-to-back buckets from Sierra West. West drained a 3-pointer with 18:50 left to swing the lead back to the Rangers before grabbing a steal and a fast-break layup on the next possession.
UIndy answered the call, whittling the Rangers' nine-point buffer to just two points with a 9-2 run. Neither squad led by more than four points the rest of the game, in a back and forth battle that featured seven lead changes and five ties. Indianapolis led 71-67 with just under four minutes left before UWP rattled off six points in a row to reclaim the lead 73-71 with 1:54 left. Slivka scored four of the points during the run as a Gaby Bronson jumper was bookended by a pair of Slivka free throws and a Slivka layup. UIndy tied the game on a pair of free throws with 52 seconds left before a Slivka layup with 27 ticks left put the Rangers back on top. UIndy tied the game at the line with nine seconds left before the Rangers converted the buzzer-beating layup for the win.
West hit seven of her 10 attempts from the floor, chipping in 16 points while dishing out nine assists. Jenna Endisch added 13 points and four assists while Jaleesa Trussell was the fourth Ranger in double figures, coming off the bench and collecting 10 points.
Kristin Turner paced UIndy with a game-high 25 points while Dajana Jovanovic and Kirsten Gliesmann came off the bench and added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Gliesmann led the Greyhounds on the glass with nine rebounds while Katy McIntosh led the game with six steals.
UW-Parkside finished the game shooting 52.5 percent (31-for-59) from the floor, scorching the nets in the second half by shooting 65.4 percent (17-for-26).
