GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Maryville (Tenn.) advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 68-61 win against Otterbein on Friday.
In the first half, Maryville’s Kiera Payne and Mackenze Puckett helped the Scots shoot 46 percent, but Otterbein’s Hannah Day and her 14 points led to a 29-27 lead at the intermission, despite only shooting 35 percent as a team.
A 42-41 Maryville deficit was quickly turned around by a Lailah Farmer 3-pointer, as well as a Janell Menard rebound and basket to give Maryville a 46-42 lead. At the 9:35 mark, a Tabatha Piper basket tied the game at 46.
Maryville point guard Lauren Burnett hit three consecutive 3-pointers, giving the Scots a 55-46 advantage with eight minutes remaining.
As Otterbein attempted to chip away the lead, Puckett connected on one long distance shot, a break-away basket and five free throws to seal the victory.
Otterbein finished its season 21-7 behind a game-high 23 points by Hannah Day. Day went 10-for-22 from the field, while Tabatha Piper added 13 points.
Maryville (24-4) had four players score in double figures in the win. Burnett went 6-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-8 from beyond the arc for a 17-point game. Puckett also deposited 17 points while bringing down five boards. Payne exploded for a double-double hauling down a game-high ten rebounds while going 7-for-11 from the floor with 16 points. Menard chipped in 10 points after sinking 5 of 12 of her shots.
