INDIANAPOLIS — Three programs are making their first appearance in the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, while two are celebrating being selected more than 30 times in the 32-year history of the event, as the 64-team field of competitors was announced Monday by the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee.
Earning No. 1 seeds are Baylor (32-1); Notre Dame (31-1); Connecticut (29-4) and Stanford (31-2). Baylor, Notre Dame and Stanford each won their respective conference regular season and tournament titles in the Big 12, Big East and Pac-12 Conferences, respectively, while Connecticut was an at-large selection from the Big East.
Thirty-one conferences were granted automatic bids for the championship and the remaining 33 teams were selected at-large.
First- and second-round games will be played at 16 sites Saturday, March 23, thru Tuesday, March 26, with the 16 second-round winners moving on to the four regional sites. The Bridgeport Regional (Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard, Bridgeport, Conn.) and the Spokane Regional (Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, Spokane, Wash.) will be played on Saturday, March 30, and Monday, April 1, while the Norfolk Regional (Ted Constant Center, Norfolk, Va.) and the Oklahoma City Regional (Chesapeake Energy Arena, Oklahoma City, Okla.) will be held Sunday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 2. The four regional winners will advance to the 2013 NCAA Women’s Final Four April 7 and 9 in New Orleans (New Orleans Arena).
Tennessee continues its appearance streak, participating now in all 32 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships. Second on the all-time appearance list is Georgia, making its 30th overall appearance. California Polytechnic State, Quinnipiac and Wichita State are making their first NCAA tournament appearance this year.
In the history of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, 14 schools have captured the national title. Tennessee leads the way with eight championships followed by Connecticut with seven. Baylor is the defending national champion after claiming the 2012 title in Denver with an 80-61 win against Notre Dame in the title game, making history as the first college basketball program, men or women, to go 40-0. Interesting to note that the 2013 No. 1 seed line is identical to 2012, with Baylor, Notre Dame, Connecticut and Stanford all seeded No. 1 to start the championship. Those four advanced to the 2012 Women’s Final Four a year ago.
