Lady Hawks top FDU, NU in poll
UMES takes over No. 1 spot for third time in school history
Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team was ranked No. 1 in the latest National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) poll. The Lady Hawks received 16 of 25 first-place votes in the December poll for a total of 704 points.
Since the last poll, UMES claimed its first-ever Hawk Classic title, a 20-team annual event the Lady Hawks host. The 2010 tournament included 13 of the country's top 16 teams. The Lady Hawks overcame a rough opening day to dominate the field over the final two days while setting a school record for team game scores. The Hawks also took home a second-place trophy at the New Jersey Jamboree to open the season.
UMES owns a 19-1 record in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play and holds a six-game lead over rival Delaware State. UMES is 41-7 overall and is tied for the most wins among ranked teams, alongside No. 7 Kutztown and No. 10 Adelphi.
This is the third time UMES has been ranked No. 1. The Lady Hawks were also No. 1 in the March 2010 poll and earned their first-ever No. 1 ranking in October of 2008.
Defending national champion Fairleigh Dickinson, which won the Jamboree title against UMES to start the year, is ranked second after collecting four first-place votes. Nebraska is ranked third and received the remaining five first-place votes while Central Missouri, who the Hawks beat to win the Hawk Classic, is fourth and newcomer Sam Houston State, a first-year program, earned its first-ever ranking at fifth.
