Carbondale, Ill.– The No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis men’s cross country team and the No. 4 women’s cross country team each ran to a third-place finish at the Southern Illinois University Saluki Invitational on Saturday morning in Carbondale, Ill.

NCAA Division I Southern Illinois won both the men’s and women’s races, with scores of 18 and 35 points respectively. The WUSTL men’s team submitted a team score of 59 points in its 8K race, while the Washington U. women’s team tallied 75 points in its 5K competition.

The men’s squad featured a pair of top-10 finishes. Senior Dave Spandorfer led the way for the Bears, placing fifth overall with a time 25:51.4, while freshman Caleb Ford grabbed ninth place with a time of 26:19.9.

Washington University’s other three scorers each crossed the finish line within 20 seconds of one another. Junior Malik Nabulsi finished in 19th place with a time of 27:232.6, freshman Tarek Elhage finished eight seconds later to grab 21st overall in 27:30.1, and freshman Justin Rodriguez rounded out the WUSTL top five with a time of 27:41.5, good for 23rd place.

Each of the top-five finishes for the Washington University women’s team crossed the finish line in succession as the Bears staked claim to places 13-17 with fewer than six seconds separating the team’s first and fifth scorer.
Out front for the Red and Green was junior Catherine Reynolds, who finished in 20:18.9, with freshman Gabby Reuveni (20:19.5) and sophomore Lexy Millett (20:19.9) following close behind.

Freshman Elizabeth Worley came in 16th place with a time of 20:23.4, and a second later freshman Lizzy Handschy claimed 17th in 20:24.4.
The Washington U. men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 2, when they compete in the competitive Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., beginning at 9:30 a.m. (ET).
