GUNNISON, Colo. – Second-ranked Western State proved their its strength Saturday. The Mountaineers took home both team titles as Tara Richardson and Adam Sinda took individual honors at the 2012 Mountaineer Open.
The No. 2 WSCU men dominated from start to finish and placed 10 runners in the top 11. The Mountaineers had every runner in the top 15, but four were running unattached. Gabe Proctor is a WSCU runner, but was unattached and finished a very-close second, one second behind Sinda’s winning time of 26:10.
With the multitude of top finishes, the WSCU men took the team title. The Mountaineers scored 15 points, which was 44 points better than second place Colorado Mesa.
Ian Butler finished six seconds behind Proctor to take third with a time of 26:17.
The No. 4 WSCU women have now taken home two consecutive team titles to begin the 2012 season. At the Joe Vigil Invite on Sept. 8, the women edged No. 2 Adams State by two points. The Mountaineers had a little more breathing room at the Mountaineer Open, beating second-place Colorado Mesa by 46 points.
The Mountaineer women placed seven runners in the top 10 . Richardson crossed the line first with a time of 21:47. Following closely behind was Sophie McNeely, who finished second with a time of 21:54. Colorado Christian’s Regan Mullen placed third with a time of 22:10.
