NASHUA, N.H. – American International captured its first NCAA East Region Championship on Sunday, placing first among the 27 teams competing at Mines Falls Park. The program is in just its seventh season, all under the direction of head coach Leo Mayo.

The Yellow Jackets posted a team score of 48 points, putting them 16 points ahead of second-placed Bentley. Stonehill (84 points), meet host UMass-Lowell (94 points) and Southern Connecticut State (124 points) rounded out the top-five.

UMass-Lowell senior Jeff Veiga won the individual title with a time of 28:53.7, which was 22.4 seconds ahead of freshman Michael Biwott for second. Senior Glarius Rop placed third overall with a time of 29:28.5.

Juniors Peter Gatundu and Jason Phillips placed 12th and 13th with respective times of 30:58.0 and 30:58.4, while sophomore Jeremy Antivo placed 18th with a time of 31:09.9. Sophomore Paul Fort finished 51st with a time of 32:28.9, while junior Curtis Johnson finished 56th with a time of 32:36.4.

Each of AIC's runners that placed in the top-25 earned all-region recognition.
