No. 4 Chico State at Sundodger Invitational

A movement to rename the Sundodger Invitational the "Catdodger" might be afoot if Chico State blasts through Seattle's Lincoln Park as quickly as it did the last time they ran there. Chico State won the team title in 2006, besting the likes of Washington, Washington State and a number of other Division I programs, but unfortunately does not have a chance to win it again.

The Wildcats will not be allowed to compete for the team title because of a recent NCAA rule change forcing Division I programs to meet a minimum requirement for meets made up solely of DI programs. Chico State athletes can run against the Division I athletes in the Invitational Race, but the Wildcats' team score will not be calculated.

Isaac Chavez, Alfonso Cisneros, Aaron Mora, Aaron Thomas, Dayne Gradone, Johnny Sanchez and Alex McGuirk will be sent to the line, hoping they gain valuable racing experience against teams like Washington.

The race will be on Saturday in Seattle.

No. 5 Grand Valley State at Spartan Invitational

Grand Valley State will open up the season Friday at the Spartan Invite. The team finished seventh at the 2012 championships, are ranked fifth to begin the year.

Seniors Josh Moskalewski (53rd) and Brent Showerman (82nd) along with sophomore Joe Duff (78th) return after scoring for the Lakers in last year's fifth-place finish. Competing for open spots with the top group are Alan Peterson, Chad Cini, Kyle Flores, Spencer Pageau, Casey Routledge and track All-American Larry Julson.

This weekend the team will take part in the 2013 Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State this Friday. The competition will take place at Forest Akers East Golf Course.

Some competitors will include Albion, Ashland, Central Michigan, Ferris State, Hillsdale College, Indiana (Pa.), Lake Superior State, Michigan State, Olivet, Saginaw Valley, Southern Indiana and Wayne State.

Southern Indiana will compete at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational Friday in East Lansing, Mich.

The Eagles are coming off first-place finishes at the season-opening Stegemoller Classic last Friday at the USI Cross Country Course. Junior Tyler Pence finished first.

The Eagles will see an increase in distance Friday when they compete at the Spartan Invitational. USI's men, who ran a 6k to open the season, compete at the 8k-distance throughout the next five meets.
