No. T5 Arkansas runs for two wins in dual meets
No. 4 BYU at Utah Open
SALT LAKE CITY-- No. 4 BYU won the Utah Open behind strong performances from Jonathan Nelson and Tylor Thatcher Friday afternoon at Murray Park in Salt Lake City.
The Cougars ended with 28 points. Boise State came in second place with 34 points.
Nelson took first overall in the 6k race with a time of 18:58.7 in his first meet since 2009.
Thatcher, recently voted team captain, finished second overall with a time of 19:02.4.
Dylan Shawhan was the next Cougar to finish, ending up in eighth place overall with a time of 19:20.2. Aaron Fletcher finished ninth overall with a time of 19:28.3 and Taylor Farnsworth was the last scoring Cougar, finishing in 11th place with a time of 19:32.2.
No. T5 Arkansas at Dual Meet
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The No.5 Razorbacks picked up a pair of dual meet wins Friday. The Razorbacks recorded a perfect 15 points against Missouri for the win while they scored 18 points against Missouri Southern State.
Junior Stanley Kebenei and senior Kemoy Campbell led the way for the meet and the Razorbacks, finishing with times of 20:09 and 20:10, respectively. Senior David Flynn crossed the finish line at 20:20, newcomer Gabe Gonzalez crossed at 20:28 and sophomore Cale Wallace clocked a time of 20:29.
Additionally, senior Raymond Joseph rounded out the lead pack of Razorbacks crossing the line at 20:31.
Missouri Southern State was able to hold the Razorbacks form a perfect score of 15 points by finishing its top runner in the third spot for the meet at 20:16. Arkansas would score 18 points against the Lions but still hold on for the second win of the meet and the young season.
No. 7 Wisconsin at Badger Open
MADISON, Wis. -- No. 7-ranked Wisconsin opened its 2013 season with a victory in the 6-kilometer Badger Opener at Zimmer Championship course on Friday.
The Badgers finished with a team score of 25 points, grabbing the top four spots. Junior Jacob Erschen, freshman Malachy Schrobilgen and seniors Jacob Naylor and Neal Berman crossed the finish line together with an identical time of 18:18.
Junior Matt McKenna rounded out Wisconsin’s top five, finishing 15th overall with a time of 19:14. Freshman Amir Alwan, in his Badger debut, was 27th in 20:31.
Loyola (Ill.) finished runner-up, scoring 38 points behind five top-10 performances. Junior Sam Penzenstadler and senior Oscar Aguinaga led the way, finishing fifth and sixth in 18:22 and 18:43, respectively. Marquette placed third with 62 points and DePaul finished fourth with 121.
No. 8 Portland at Portland State Invite
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Redshirt freshman Alex Dillard piloted the men's cross country team to an overall victory at Friday's PSU Viking Invitational at Blue Lake Park.
The Pilot men were racing against fellow Division I opponents in the Oregon Ducks and the Portland State Vikings.
Dillard and the Pilots put six of their runners in front of Oregon's five. Behind Dillard, the Pilots had redshirt freshman Alex Bowns, redshirt junior Chris Borg, redshirt junior Stephen Kersh, and redshirt freshman Griffin Hay to round out their top five.
