East Lansing, Mich. — Grand Valley State had a full squad participating at Friday’s Spartan Invitational on the campus of Michigan State. It was junior Monica Kinney picking up where she left off last season, who finished fourth at the meet with a time of 20:47 among a Division I-heavy field.
Kinney was the highest finishing Division II runner in the event with her performance. Senior Julia Nowak finished 28th for the Lakers with a time of 21:47 while freshman Allyson Winchester was just behind her in 29th with a time of 21:51 as three GVSU runners finished in the top 30.
Senior Jessie Vickers was 33rd (21:59) while junior Karie McDonald was the fifth-highest GVSU finisher in 45th (22:12).
The Lakers also got strong performances from junior Theresa Wolter who was 48th (22:18) and freshman Hannah Osborn who round out the top 50 with a time of 22:19.
“One person who really showed some courage was Wolters who got tripped and fell 100 meters into the race and when she got up she was near the back of the pack,” said coach Jerry Baltes on the junior’s performance. “She ran a great race and got a personal best.”
“This was a starting point to see where we are,” Baltes commented. “We found out the potential is there for some great things to happen this season. We know we have a lot of work to do and we are confident we will make the improvements needed by season’s end. We will put some of our freshmen in uniform from here on out and look for some strong races from them to add depth to our squads.”
