Freshman Rodts led Lakers with an eight-place finish
HILLSDALE, Mich. -- No. 4 Grand Valley State competed in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Hillsdale College on Friday and despite sitting many of its top runners, still claimed a sixth-place finish.
Freshman Madie Rodts led the way for the Lakers, finishing eighth overall with a time of 18:53.72, nearly a career best.
Also placing in the top 20 was sophomore Courtney Brewis, who finished with a time of 19:17.04.
Freshman Brianna Hewett finished 34th (19:38.97) while sophomore Kelcie Severson was 44th (19:53.46) and sophomore Molly Slavens was 44th (19:53.46) to round out the scoring for the Lakers.
The Lakers were without their top 12 runners as they rested to prepare for next week's Penn State Invitational.
"We got a great race from Madie Rodts," Laker head coach Jerry Baltes said. "She was very close to a lifetime best on a tough course and in warm weather conditions."
Michigan State claimed the team title with a 48 point total while the top five was rounded out by Western Michigan (75), Saginaw Valley State (112), Calvin (119) and Hillsdale (139) with the Lakers only five points behind in sixth.
