Wisconsin upsets then-No. 15 Virginia for Panorama Farms team title
EARLYSVILLE, Va. -- On Saturday, Wisconsin ran to its third consecutive victory at the Panorama Farms Invitational by placing four runners in the top 10 among a strong field in the 5-kilometer event.
The Badgers emerged with a team score of 35 points. Senior Ashley Beutler led the way, running to a fourth-place finish overall in a time of 17 minutes, 43.8 seconds. Sophomore Gabrielle Anzalone finished right behind Beutler in fifth place overall with a time of 17:49.1.
Senior Hanna Knurr placed seventh in 18:10.2, while junior Kiah Ehrke crossed the line in 18:19.4 to finish eighth. Sophomore Theresa Selestow placed 11th overall and rounded out the top five for Wisconsin with a time of 18:33.3.
“I came away very impressed with how we competed this morning,” head coach Jim Stintzi said. “We ran well together and our leaders did a great job of staying at the front.”
Kentucky junior Cally Macumber won the individual title with a time of 17:29.2 and helped the Wildcats secure a second-place finish with a team score of 47 points. Virginia senior Catherine White finished in second place overall (17:34.7) and helped the then-No. 15 host team claim third place with a score of 57 points. Cal finished in fourth with 83 points.
“Out of context, winning doesn’t always mean a lot in cross country, but this is a great team victory for us,” Stintzi said. “We were running against a pretty strong field for the first time this year and we responded very well.”
