No. 3 Grand Valley State dominates meet with 10 top-20 finishes
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Third-ranked Grand Valley State dominated the field on Friday at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championship, sweeping the top three spots and placing 10 runners in the top 19 to win the event hosted by by Calvin, which is ranked No. 8 in DIII.
Redshirt freshman Jessica Janecke traversed the 5k course in a time of 17:16.4 to win the event.
Sophomore Allyson Winchester wasn't far behind, placing second with a time of 17:19.3.
Junior Courtney Brewis completed the GVSU trio at the top of the standings, crossing the line third in a time of 17:34.9.
Also finishing in the top five was junior Kelcie Severson with a time of 17:46.8.
Another six Laker runners found their way across the line within the top 20, including sophomore Madie Rodts and junior Molly Slavens finishing in eighth (18:00.5) and ninth (18:00.8), respectively.
Sophomore Hannah Osborn came across 12th with a time of 18:05.9, while junior Kelsey Young and sophomore Brianna Hewett finished 14th (18:07.2) and 16th (18:08.5). Redshirt freshman Mary Boyd was the final Laker in the top 20, crossing the line in 19th with a time of 18:10.0.
GVSU easily won the team title with 19 total points, outdistancing second-place Calvin (74) and No. 35 Saginaw Valley State in third (85).
Leading Calvin's finishers was sophomore Kimby Penning who earned a 10th-place finish in 18:03.9. Trailing her and taking 11th was sophomore Lizzy Vannette who finished in 18:04.6. Freshman McKenzie Diemer was next across the line in 14th place with a time of 18:07.5. Senior Christine Hartley finished 19th with a time of 18:13.9 while junior Alyssa Oram finished 20th in 18:16.5. Finishing in 24th and Calvin’s sixth spot was senior Kaylea Brase in 18:40.5 while sophomore Sarah Danner rounded out the Knights' top seven with a 31st-place finish in 18:49.7.
