No. 1 GVSU placed four in top five, No. 10 WT places second
No. 1 Grand Valley State at Spartan Invitational
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Grand Valley State cross country teams got off to a solid start in the 2013 season with a solid showing at the Spartan Invite on Friday. The team put four runners in the top five of the non-DI race and eight in the top 15.
Held on the campus of Michigan State, it was sophomore Jessica Janecke for the women who crossed the line first with a time of 21:19 to lead a group of three Lakers. Following just behind her in second was senior Courtney Brewis (21:25) and junior Allyson Winchester (21:32).
In fifth place was junior Hannah Osborn (21:45) to give GVSU four runners in the top five.
Also with solid finishes were sophomore Jordan Chester in 10th (21:57), senior Molly Slavens in 11th (22:03), senior Madie Rodts in 13th (22:08) and freshman Alison Work in 15th (22:10). Newcomer and graduate student Alycia Thurston finished 19th (22:24), while junior Kelsey Young (21st; 22:28) and freshman Amy Creutz (22nd; 22:28) also had top-25 finishes.
No. 10 West Texas A&M at Red Raider Open
CANYON, Texas -- No. 10 West Texas A&M performed strongly Friday night by claiming second place as a team in the 2013 Texas Tech Red Raider Open. The event featured a 5K (3.1 miles) and was held at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock, Texas.
The Lady Buffs claimed the meet title last season with a team total of 29 points; however, had to settle for second this year. Texas Tech would place first overall with 37 points total.
WT finished with a total time of 1:41:21.13, featuring an average time of 20:16.23 per runner.
Sophomore Mireia Guarner led the way for the Lady Buffs by finishing seventh overall with a time of 19:37.09. Senior Amber Moore crossed the line next for WT at 20:09.81 in 11th place.
