BOULDER, Colo.-
Competing against rival Adams State and a slate of Division I teams in the Rocky Mountain Shootout, both Western State men's and women's cross country teams took second. Lauren Kleppin came in first for the Mountaineer women with a time of 21 minutes, 37 seconds, and took ninth place overall.

Western State finished with 38 team points, seven behind the Grizzlies in the first meeting between the two teams this season. Kleppin placed fourth among non-Division I, and was followed by Sarah Lyle and Hillory Davis. Tara Richardson placed fourth on the team and Emily Kirchhofer rounded out the scoring runners with 22:36 with a No. 13 place finish among the non-Division I athletes.

For the men's side, Sean Brown came in No. 15 out of 280 runners, with a time of 25:50. The Mountaineers were competing without their top runner, Tyler Pennel, as well as Tyler Rasmussen, who was a member of the national runner-up team last season. David Flynn and Garrett Wilson finished No. 33 and No. 34, respectively, while Mike Schwindt and Trevor Blackman placed No. 39 and No. 40, respectively, to close out the Western State scoring runners.

The Mountaineers will take next weekend off before splitting squads Oct. 16. The top runners will compete at the Fort Hays State Open, while the rest of the squad will compete in the 60th Annual W Mountain Run in Gunnison.
