St. John's tops defending champs
Red Storm pick up wins against Penn State, finish 3-2

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Led by strong performances in the men's and women's saber, the St. John's fencing team defeated two-time defending national champions Penn State, and both the men's and women's squads finished 3-2 on the day at the St. John's Invitational.
Both teams opened competition by topping Columbia, Ohio State and Penn State in the morning session, before falling to Notre Dame and Harvard in the afternoon.
The STJ women were led by All-American Dagmara Wozniak in the saber, who finished 12-3 on the day and freshman Anna Limbach who went 11-4.
On the men's side, defending national champion Daryl Homer posted a record of 11-4, while Alejandro Rojas finished the day at 10-4.
Junior Nicholas Vomero also had an impressive day finished 11-4 in the epee. In the women's foil, Evgeniya Kirpicheva went 10-5 at the event.
On Saturday, St. John's competed at the NYU Invitational where the women had a record of 3-2 and the men finished 5-0.
The Red Storm fencing team will return to competition on Feb. 27 at the National Squad Championships at NYU.
