BLOOMSBURG— In a battle of the top two teams in Division II field hockey, the Bloomsburg University Huskies lost to Shippensburg University by a score of 3-1 on Saturday.
Shippensburg, the top-ranked team in Division II, took an early lead in the game scoring just 2:20 into the contest when Amanda Strous scored off an assist from Ashley Taylor.
Bloomsburg, ranked second in the country, got on the board at the 17:07 mark when Julia Rush (Quakertown, Quakertown) converted a penalty stroke to knot the game at 1-1. The Huskies kept the pressure on the Lady Raiders offensively getting did three penalty corners in the final 16 minutes of the half, but could not convert.
Shippensburg took the lead for good early in the second half off a penalty corner with Ashley Taylor scoring off an assist Katie Pufnock just 41 seconds into the period.
The Lady Raiders added to their lead in the 43rd minute when Bre White scored an unassisted goal. The Huskies did have four penalty corner attempts in the final twenty minutes but could not score and saw their four-game winning streak to open the season come to an end.
Bloomsburg falls to 4-1, while Shippensburg improves to 6-0. The Huskies play at Millersville on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
