COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Blue Devil freshman Emmie Le Marchand pulled Duke within one late in the second half, but the Terrapins netted an insurance goal with just under two minutes remaining as No. 2 Maryland defeated No. 14 Duke, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in College Park, Md.

Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Duke (6-7, 0-4 ACC) was awarded a penalty corner at the 65:54 mark and capitalized on the opportunity to narrow the deficit to one goal. Le Marchand, Dukes leading goal scorer for the season, deflected in the shot for her fifth goal this year. Junior Tara Jennings was awarded the assist, her third in 2010.

With Duke looking to knot the score at two-all, Maryland (11-1, 4-0 ACC) was able to convert an insurance goal at the 68:24 mark, bringing the final tally to 3-1. Duke received a strong performance from senior goalkeeper Samantha Nelson, who stopped nine Terrapin shots to anchor the Duke defense.

Maryland opened the scoring seven minutes into the game with a goal from leading scorer Katie ODonnell and added a second goal just before halftime to enter the intermission with a 2-0 advantage. For the game, the Terrapins led the Blue Devils in both shots (20-5) and penalty corners (12-5).

Next up, Duke heads to Washington, D.C. for a 1 p.m. match-up against No. 10 American tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 10. The Blue Devils will hit the road against next weekend, traveling to William & Mary and Old Dominion.
