No. 8 Syracuse Beats No. 4 UConn in 2-OT

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Connecticut dominated statistically but No. 8 Syracuse scored a double-overtime goal to defeat the No. 4 University of Connecticut field hockey team, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in Syracuse. With the loss, the Huskies slip to 13-4 on the season and 3-2 in BIG EAST action. The Orange improve to 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the loop.

The Huskies created 15 shots and put 11 of those 15 attempts on goal. UConn also held a 9-6 edge in penalty corners.

UConn has now allowed one goal or less 14 times this season.

Syracuse keeper Leann Stiver turned away all 11 of those shots on goal though while Husky keeper Sarah Mansfield stopped three shots.

The game-winner came off the stick of Martina Loncarica 90:31 into the contest. Loncarica’s eighth goal of the season came after the Orange were awarded a penalty corner, and was assisted by Laura Hahnefeldt.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, October 30 when the team welcomes Rutgers to the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The contest will be preceded by senior day ceremonies and will include a ceremony to honor the 1985 National Championship Team. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
