SHIPPENSBURG - Kristina Taylor scored the game-winning goal 8:23 into the overtime session to give No. 1-ranked Shippensburg a 3-2 victory over No. 3 East Stroudsburg University in a showdown of two of the top field hockey teams in Division II on Saturday afternoon.
Kristina Taylors goal followed the game-tying goal by Ashley Taylor with just under six minutes left as the Lady Raiders (13-0) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit.
ESU (13-2) went ahead 1-0 at the 5:18 mark in the first half on the third goal of the season by sophomore forward Alyson Becker, and led by two goals after senior forward Jessica Frantz scored her 26th goal of the year just over 20 minutes into the game.
Shippensburg got on the board with 2:14 left until halftime on a goal by Emily Kohlbus, but the Warriors still maintained a 2-1 lead until Ashley Taylors goal in the final 10 minutes.
The Lady Raiders used a staunch defensive effort to keep the Warriors off the board after the first 20 minutes, holding a 7-0 advantage in shots in the second half and a 5-0 margin in the overtime session. Shippensburg had a 21-8 advantage in shots for the game.
Junior goalkeeper Maureen Ordnung made nine saves for the Warriors. Shippensburg changed goalkeepers after Ciarra Delost played the first 25 minutes. Carenna Neely was in goal for the final 53 minutes but was not required to make a save in posting the win.
Frantzs goal extended her lead as the top scorer in Division II this season and was the 40th of her two-year career at ESU. She had 18 goals in two years at IUP before scoring 14 goals last fall in her first season for the Warriors.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday, November 11 when they get together in non-conference action at Whitenight Field. Shippensburg was ranked No. 1 in the South Region in last weeks NCAA Division II field hockey rankings, followed by ESU at No. 2.
