Orange Advances to BIG EAST Championship

STORRS, Conn. - Junior forward Heather Susek scored twice as the Syracuse field hockey team advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game with its 4-1 win against Rutgers today at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex on the campus of the University of Connecticut. SUs seventh consecutive victory improves its mark to 14-6, while Rutgers ends its season 8-12. The Orange will play for its fifth BIG EAST Tournament championship tomorrow at 1 p.m. Syracuse will face the winner of the Louisville/Connecticut semifinal game.
Susek scored Syracuses first goal with 20:38 remaining in the first half. The junior took a pass from freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer, spun and beat Rutgers goalkeeper Sarah Stuby low.
Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad gave the Orange a 2-0 advantage with 3:34 left in the first stanza. Freshman back Laura Hahnefeldt sent a pass to Conrad who found room from the right-side of the cage. Conrad, SUs career leader in goals with 45, also ranks on SUs all-time points list with 108. The senior has recorded 14 points off seven goals this season. It was Hahnefeldts first career point.
Susek scored her second goal of the day off a rebound from a Conrad shot to give SU a 3-0 lead with 31:20 remaining in the game. Susek now has 21 points off nine goals and three assists.
Rutgers cut the margin to 3-1 with 12:25 remaining as Nicole Gentile found the back of the cage.
Sophomore forward Kelsey Millman scored SUs final goal of the day to make the score 4-1 with 4:48 left in the contest. The sophomore put home a rebound off a shot by sophomore back Amy Kee from a SU penalty corner. Millman has registered four points off two goals this season.
Syracuse outshot Rutgers, 13-9, and held a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver made five saves for SU.
