Late Surge Fuels Penn State over Iowa
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State scored three goals vs. No. 12 Iowa while holding the Hawkeyes scoreless, and rolled to a 4-0 victory over the Hawkeyes on Saturday, Oct. 8. The win kept No. 6 Penn State (13-1, 3-0) perfect in Big Ten action, and extended the team's winning streak to 13 games, the second-longest streak in program history.
Natalie Berrena (State College, Pa.) scored two goals, including Penn State's lone score in the first half. Shaun Banta (Gibbsboro, N.J.) and Kiersten Wood (Lititz, Pa.) also tallied goals for the Nittany Lions.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Akstin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) once again proved tough in the cage, leading the Lions to their seventh shutout on the season.
Penn State got on the board early when Berrena fired a shot from the top of the arc in the 11th minute. The Lions stayed quite through the rest of the period and finished the half with one goal off one shot.
Banta gave Penn State a cushion at the 41:47 mark when she slapped in a rebounded shot. Berrena connected again in the 60th minute to make it 3-0, and Wood tallied the final goal off a penalty stroke at the 63:39 mark.
Berrena's two scores give her nine on the season, while Banta's goal gives her 12, which is tops on the team. Wood's score is her fifth this season.
The team returns home for a final three-game homestand vs. Michigan State (Oct. 15), Bucknell (Oct. 18) and Ohio State (Oct. 22).
